An image of the U.S. Capitol being hit by an explosion has been posted on a North Korean propaganda website.
The video, published by the semi-official Uriminzokkiri agency and posted on its YouTube account, at first shows still images of North Korean artillery, missiles and soldiers.
It then moves on to film of numerous missiles being fired, before showing what appears to be a gun sight zeroing in on the White House and then the U.S. Capitol.
"The White House is caught in the panoramic sight of a (North Korean) long-range missile. This hotbed of war is in the scope of a nuclear bomb blow," a caption on the video says, according to a translation by the South Korean news agency Yonhap.
An explosion hits the dome of the Capitol building, leaving a gaping hole. The four-minute film then continues with yet more images of rockets being fired.
A video showing an American city that looked like New York engulfed in flames after a missile attack was posted on the same website last month.

An image taken from a North Korean propaganda website Monday appears to show the U.S. Capitol -- wrongly identified as the White House -- being hit by a missile.
It was part of a dream sequence in which a photographer circles the earth in a fictional North Korea space shuttle. It was accompanied by an instrumental version of the song “We are the World.”
"Black smoke is seen somewhere in America," text that accompanied the video said. "It seems that the nest of wickedness is ablaze with the fire it started."
'Petulant child'
Tension has been high on the Korean Peninsula since the North carried out a rocket test in December and then a nuclear bomb test in February.
It also took the opportunity to threaten South Korea with “final destruction” during a United Nations Conference on Disarmament last month.
A propaganda video posted on YouTube by the North Korea government shows a missile launch and a city that appears to be New York, in flames. NBC's Brian Williams reports.
And then on March 9, the North threatened to exercise its “right to a pre-emptive nuclear attack" as new sanctions were unanimously agreed by the United Nations Security Council.
Heather Williams, a research fellow at the U.K.’s Chatham House website, said North Korea was “almost like a petulant child,” constantly wanting to remind people of its existence by acting out.
She said images like the Capitol and New York explosions fitted the theme of previous propaganda from Pyongyang, but added “at the same time, it’s a more serious situation than we have seen in quite a while.”
“It is a reminder of the situation and that things could escalate,” she said.
Williams said Kim Jong Un was a “young, new leader” who still needed to “prove himself” to the country’s powerful military.
“My take is that it is overwhelmingly bluster for domestic reasons, not international ones,” she said.
Last week, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told Congress he was "very concerned" about North Korea's recent rhetoric as well as the rocket and nuclear bomb tests, The Associated Press reported.
"These programs demonstrate North Korea's commitment to develop long-range missile technology that could pose a direct threat to the United States, and its efforts to produce and market ballistic missiles raise broader regional and global security concerns," Clapper told the Senate Intelligence committee.

North Korea is a dangerous country. The military drives the government -- what government there is -- and is threatening the US with a nuclear attack. The White House increases America's missile defense, but doesn't explain to North Korea that we can totally erase their country from the map in about three hours. I guess it's a good thing not to tell them, so when we don't do anything after they destroy an American city, they won't be surprised.
We don't explain this to NK because we don't need to. They know full well we can and will destroy everything in that country in about 48 hours, if that. All of this bluster is for the benefit of the North Koreans who are isolated from the rest of the world. It takes their minds off of their own suffering when they believe they are always under the threat of attack from the US and Kim is keeping them safe.
I remember a day when other countries threatening to launch nuclear strikes against America actually meant something.
Technically, yes we could. But realistically, with South Korea on one side and China on the other...and Japan being downwind, a nuclear strike would probably never be considered even if they managed to nuke a US city.

That's all N Korea can do- is dream of defeating the US in an attack. In reality they'd be laid to waste in no time.
We all assume the people with power in that country are also the people in the know, but I'm not sure that's true. There is such a culture of face-saving in the East, it's not uncommon for underlings not to contradict their superiors even when faced with absurdities. I've no doubt the NK intelligence analysts know the truth of things, but I wouldn't be surprised if the fat kid at the top has never been told how close he is to being annihilated. He probably thinks we're actually scared of him and that he has some sort of standing in the world. THAT's what makes him dangerous. He really is that uninformed.

Kim Jong Un is trolling the US pretty hard because he is a despot who has to continue to show power or else he gets booted on his azz by the next roving bandit-type. That's standard political science.
To his credit, though, he does understand nuclear realpolitik: no one invades a country full of nukes, even the cheap ones. Rattle a sabre every so often to keep the North Korean military elites on your side and suppressing the locals while at the same time presenting yourself as that upstart non-aligned country despot who had the balls to tell the Great Satan whatfor and you might make some friends internationally with the other cool despots (if we have any left); that's how you run a 21st Century dictatorship, kids.
Of course if he was REALLY serious we would've handed him his county in a bite-sized capsule shoved straight up his azz, but he's a useful demon right now - who else other than Ahmadinejad is going to keep the knee-jerks here in the states scared enough to allow Congress to gut social programs over our immensely bloated military/intelligence industrial complex - so he'll stay pat where he is so long as all the right folks can continue to make a profit off him.

If any war starts backup up over there...it will by accident and short lived....and no nuclear weapons will be used.
NK is just a little chihuahua with a ferocious but tiny bark and they know it. The best they can hope to achieve in a war is to nip at the heels with little hope of anything else.
Just like the chihuahua, it has to project something it isn't...due to its fear and relative size when compared to the size of its perceived enemies.
Obama is doing exactly what needs to be done...take precautions but first and foremost don't escalate the issue since that would not accomplish anything and could lead to what nobody wants...including China and even North Korea.

i doubt we would use large "nukes" on them because unlike iran and Nk we consider the deaths of civilians in such an attack unacceptable collateral damage. I guess the benefit of having so much military spending, research and development is having tools needed to render an enemy without teeth and greatly minimize civilian deaths. I'm not sure a war over there would be short lived. The one thing North Korea has a lot of -- people with rifles that are totally indoctrinated against the US and our allies. They do not have much infrastructure, so really bombing would be pretty useless -- it's actually proven that all it really does is stiffen the resolve of the people anyway.
The only way to stop North Korea in a hurry would be to stop them at the DMZ. And they will come in waves, and waves and waves.
What we need to fear is the day when the North Koreans life is do destitutethat there is nothing to lose to death. I think it similar to those that choose suicide bombing of the enemy. I suspect they are not far from it by now.

Even if the intended audience in the internal population, it is very dangerous to condition the country's mentality toward hate and war. It moves it closer and closer to the edge.

I don't think anybody ever imagined that 9/11 could have/would have been accomplished either. ALL threats, regardless how ridiculous, should be taken very seriously. Just because NK wouldn't have a chance in any war with us, nuclear or conventional, doesn't mean they aren't stupid enough to do something that would hit us somewhere with something, just like 9/11. IF they somehow hit us with a small nuclear weapon or just covertly got someone in our country to do damage similar to 9/11, what do you think our reciprocity would be? What right does NBC have to call any other media outlet a propaganda site? Has NBC read any of its own liberal biased articles, or viewed its edited videos, or examined all of the stories negative to Obama that it covered up?

Beth, NBC came in last for Feb Sweeps. And when Americans were polled to name their most trusted news source, NBC came in tied for last..... with the Comedy Channel.
So why then do I come on NBC? Because I can't expect to be able to formulate an educated viewpoint unless I know what both extremes are saying. Fox gives me the extreme conservative viewpoint, and NBC is the most liberally biased website out there.
The one thing I will say is that while Fox is selective with respect to the issues that it focuses on (as is NBC), NBC has the worst track record of anybody around when it comes to editing video clips to make a political point that ends up being based on facts that don't exist. At least the chickens are finally coming home to roost.
They don't actually have to attack to cause us tremendous problems. They won't have the potential to reach DC anytime soon, but they might be able to reach Hawaii and even the West Coast in a couple of years. Now, imagine that have those capabilities and that they tell us "lift the sanctions or we'll attack the US West Coast." Yes, if they do that, they'll be incinerated within the hour. There is no doubt regarding the outcome. But, what US leader can take the chance that they might actually launch missiles, killing millions of Americans, even though the North Koreans know the outcome is their own destruction? Our missile defenses aren't perfect. It only takes one nuke to ruin your whole day. They certainly seem crazy enough. In effect, we will have been blackmailed and there's little that we can do about it.
My question is: How much longer are we going to tolerate this crap before we vaporize this third world S%&* pit?

@SallyAnn-4595694, Yes, the A-10 Warthog can linger for some time, but it's also a low, slow mover, and it doesn't carry bunker-busters. It's primarily an aerial anti-tank platform. The bunker busters will typically come from a B52, B1, or B2.
@seaskip, just because we didn't find them, doesn't mean they didn't (ever) exist. Hussein was know to have used WMD (chemical) against both the Iranians the and Kurds. Where the remaining (if any weapons went, who knows), but he was known to have had them, and to have used them on numerous occasions.
Personally, I blame NK's current ability to produce/test nuclear weapons on Bill Clinton. NK's shutdown of their reactors was a condition of aid we sent them. We sent the aid, they didn't shutdown the reactors, or at least, not permanently. When they violated that agreement, Clinton whined to the UN while the reactors still ran, when he should have sent a few JDAMS via B2s to shutdown the reactors permanently, or at least set them back a few decades.
I just hope that the NK threat to blow up washinton, they mean DC and not the Evergreen State. :>)

Science fiction and apocalypse movies already show America being attacked (for example, in "Independence Day," ...and then in Austin Powers 2, Dr. Evil shows the White House being blown apart to a startled President and his Cabinet members, "...Well, actually that was just footage from the movie Independence Day, but the real laser would be a lot like that!"), even the UN Assembly Building being disintegrated by a mad Chief Inspector Dreyfus trying to unsuccessfully get international assassins to kill Inspector Clouseau in, "The Pink Panther Strikes Again."
Amateur video-editing teens in any part of the civilized, free world, with good editing software can do the same for Pyongyang, the Supreme People's Assembly and the untimely end of their, "Supreme Great Leader With A Number #2 Pencil Eraser-Head Black Haircut." I await seeing one posted up on YouTube. Should give me a good laugh.

There is not one person on the planet who doesn't know the situation with crazy little boy who wants to play war with his toy nuke set of missiles. Because the United State Government went pussy on us during the Korea War all the way to present is why we are in this predicament. So the big question of the day is why did we let this happen? And the answer is "Russia and China." We were so scared of them getting involved militarily that we allowed them to push us into a corner. Now there is nowhere to go but straight forward to get out.
Another problem that most nations would consider unthinkable is why would the U.S. permit the North Koreans, and soon to be, Iranians, the ability to produce nukes that are now threatening our very existence? Why? This is what happens when you allow a bully to dictate to the Winnie what you better do or else. Now we must deal with them on a scale that will be catastrophic for everyone in the region and not just South Korea. Then we dictate to the South Koreans that they can't have a nuke because we want a nuclear free SW Asia or Korean Peninsula, which is a little freaking late to say the least.
Japan and South Korea need to tell the U.S. government to go f#$k off, and build nukes to keep their existence relevant. I would seek the technology from India if I were those two nations. India could use additional allies to offset Pakistan. The only reason Pakistan and India are still relevant is because they both know the other would be radioactive dust in minutes. "Mutual Assured Destruction" keeps them relevant for now.
But this will only grow worse as the North Korean punk grows bolder with each new video and/or verbal threat of annihilation. Remember when you got into a fight a school? Slowly it would be you and the opponent in a circle surrounded by other students shouting to fight, fight, fight? And some of the kids would prod you and push you both into each other in order to get the fight started. That is what happening with the North Korean leader. He is surrounded by all these battle harden veterans who are prodding him to escalate the bullying into a fight. You can bet that he is getting an ear full from the crusty old generals who want to sharpen the swords one more time. They would be the ones who really think they could pull it off and win. As insane as this may be, to some of them, it may be their delusional reality, now that they have the bomb. This why we were suppose to prevent them from getting one. But no, lets put sanctions on them. And after that, lets put more sanctions on them. And after that, lets put super duper sanctions on them. Oh look, they developed a nuke, even though, they were not suppose to produce one for another 5-10 years! But don't worry, they haven't figured out how to put one in a missile warhead. Oh look, they developed ICBM's that carry nukes on mobile launchers. But what the hell, they weren't suppose to have that technology for another 10 years. RIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!! Oh look, they are threatening to wipe us off the map? Don't worry, we are going to put more sanctions on them to teach them a lesson!

Z, let me put it to you this way, IF a sovereign power were to 'nuke' a US city, and the President fail to respond in-kind, he might suddenly find himself taking an "early retirement" courtesy of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. At least, I would hope so.

When North Korean Military / Propagandists say: we will make a preemptive strike to deal with US aggressions...
this is like...
US politicians saying we need to search your children at the airport to make sure they aren't terrorists.
Leaders the whole world over and all the way back to the beginning of time have controlled the people by making demons out of everyone external to their culture.
North Korea is as much of a threat to the US as the taliban (a localized militia) is. If we leave them to spout this crap to their people, that's what they will do. It only becomes a concern when NK's economy gets to the point where the government has to enact a false flag to make it seem like they have been attacked.
If NK fires on anybody, the US will strike back. We will have the moral authority.
And it won't take 3 hours. 17 minutes to warm up the birds and launch, 8 minutes to impact.
Should only take two missiles. I can't imagine that there are more than 16 legitimate targets in all of NK.
But, NK must strike first.

Why do people always assume we'd use nukes to attack anyone anymore? We don't need nukes to eradicate NK. Conventional warfare enacted by our military is so overwhelmingly more powerful than what NK has available it would be like taking candy from a baby. It wouldn't be cheap, and we'd unfortunately lose some people, but using a nuke would be disastrous for everyone.

Cogito's explanation of radiation effects is accurate. These are the results of the studies done after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Not much argument there.
However, the amount of radiation from 16 W76 thermonuclear warheads would still be less that the 2 bombs dropped on Japan. About 1kg of plutonium (16 W76 estimated) vs 6.2kg in Fat Man. About 25kg uranium (16 W76 estimated) vs 25.6kg in Little Boy.
The difference in yield is great, though. 38 kilotons (Japan) vs. 1600 kilotons (16 W76). And the radioactive particles would be much more widely dispersed (obviously).
I'm not a "lib" :) I find there are valid points on the many sides in the debate (not the resistance to the dichotomy).

Yes, that is true, but it would be massive overkill. As I've said, 16 W76 warheads would probably be more than sufficient for the task.
I think you underestimate the North Koreans ability to fight conventional warfare. They do not need to cross the 38th parallel. All they have to do is line up their 170 mm Self-propelled Howitzers with a range of 186 miles and remove one third of South Korea from the map. I think the 25,000 artillery guns they have ought to do the job. Seoul, South Korea would be rubble in 30 minutes or less with just one quarter of North's guns. The United States would have to bring up 8 of their 16 carriers to put a sustain hurting on the North. However, a couple carrier killer cruise missiles procured from China with nuclear tipped warheads would remove the U.S. Carrier threat. China has successfully tested the missile, and they have mass produced it in the event we decide to send the Pacific Fleet to defend Taiwan. If we decide the nuclear option, i.e., B52, B2, and subs it could get very nasty for both sides. Nuclear fallout would be catastrophic for both China and South Korea due to constant change in wind direction. That would force the U.S. to use nuclear tip artillery shells or tactical field nukes which could still go a rye should one or more of the shells go off course and hit Chinese soil.
So yes, using nukes would be disastrous for everyone. Of course, all of this is pure speculation on our part. Either way, North must be removed from the map less we want to keep paying the bully on the block until hell freezes over.

I think most North Koreans would welcome turning their country into a nuclear wasteland --- it would be an improvement in their standard of living.
If anyone thinks this sort of propaganda coming out of the DPRK is unusual, they need to look at what that government has been putting out consistently for over half a century. The only difference between now and the 1950s is that now they have video graphics as opposed to paper posters.
The rest of the world has moved beyond propaganda like this because it doesn't work any more with the exchange of verifiable information over the internet. Most countries can't cut all the lines because they depend on them for commerce and even if they did, people would use satellite phones or sneaker net using flash drives to get information in and out.
North Korea is probably the only country left that can still pull this kind of thing off.
So, they actually don't have to attack anybody at all. They can just broadcast that they did with crude graphics editing to prove it to their own people. The net result is actually better for them if they fake it. That way they could claim to have weakened and won against the U.S. and the west. That's a claim that would be very hard to maintain with continuing air strikes hitting their missile sites and infrastructure and no fly zones grounding their planes as retaliation from U.S. and NATO forces. Propaganda only works if it's believed. A real attack and the repercussions would launch a new class of non-believers with real information growing exponentially which the North Korean government would have a hard time suppressing for very long.
We still need to take this threat seriously, but I think the propaganda alone is giving them the control over their people that they do want without the assured ass kicking from a real attack that they don't want.

dammit steve1962 - do you have any idea of how SMALL US weapons are? backpack sized weapons are about 50 pounds and the size of a case of beer. That's because of the SHIELDING - supposedly the N Korean's weapons are quite a bit bigger in volume AND weight - and the test before their recent test was a dud - they were experimenting with how "impure" the fissile material could be and still detonate. They don't have a source of lithium deuteride so they can't DO a fusion weapon (and that's the source of the REALLY BIG BANG).
The N K just aren't that sophisticated
