'Sheer savagery': Syrian rebel rips out soldier's heart, Human Rights Watch says

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

A Syrian rebel commander has been caught on video cutting out the heart of a soldier and biting into it, Human Rights Watch said late Monday.

Amateur video posted online shows a man cutting into the dead soldier's torso and removing his liver and heart.

The New York-based rights group identified the man as Abu Sakkar, a founder of the rebel Omar al-Farouq Brigade.

In the video, which prompted outrage on all sides of the country’s deadly civil war, the man says: "I swear to God we will eat your hearts and your livers, you soldiers of Bashar the dog,”according to HRW.

Sakkar also uses sectarian language to insult Alawites, HRW said. More than 80,000 are thought to have been killed in the increasingly sectarian conflict, in which majority Sunni Muslims have sought to overthrow Assad, whose family is chiefly supported by Alawites, who are an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Access to country is difficult because of government restrictions and security concerns, making it hard for observers and news organizations to independently verify the source and authenticity of Internet videos.

HRW said it compared frames in the clip to similar videos of the same man and spoke to sources in Homs, including other rebels, who identified Sakkar.

“It is not known whether the Independent Omar al-Farouq Brigade operates within the command structure of the Free Syrian Army,” HRW said Monday. “But the opposition Syrian National Coalition and the Free Syrian Army leadership should take all possible steps to hold those responsible for war crimes accountable and prevent such abuses by anyone under their command.”

It repeated its call for the United Nations Security Council to refer Syria’s conflict to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to ensure accountability for all war crimes and crimes against humanity.

“Even by the standards of Syria's ever-worsening stream of atrocity and massacre videos, the latest footage from the country cannot fail to shock for its sheer savagery,” HRW emergencies director Peter Bouckaert wrote on the Foreign Policy news site.

“Abu Sakkar is just one man, and there are many other armed fighters in Syria who reject such sectarian actions and would be horrified by the mutilation and desecration of a corpse -- let alone an act of cannibalism. But he is a commander in a decisive battle in Syria -- hardly a marginal figure.”

Fahad Almasri, a spokesman for the Free Syrian Army condemned the actions portrayed in the video.

"First, who did this behavior has not the FSA, does not represent us and does not represent the Syrian Revolution. We in the joint command of FSA categorically reject any actions or behaviors do not respect the values and ethics of Syrian Revolution and FSA, and we condemn in the strongest words of condemnation of such acts of individual that does not accept them never," Almasri said.

The United States and Russia this week proposed an international conference aimed at ending the war. A Syria government minister on Tuesday said it wanted more details before deciding whether it would agree to attend, Reuters reported.

Syrian Information Minister Omran Zoabi was quoted by state news agency SANA as saying that Syria welcomed the proposal but stressed it "will not be a party at all to any ... meeting which harms, directly or indirectly, national sovereignty."

29 alleged Papua New Guinea cannibals charged with killing 7 over sorcery fees

    By msnbc.com staff

Papua New Guinea police arrested 29 members of an alleged cannibal cult and charged them with the murder of at least seven suspected witch doctors.

    Follow @msnbc_world

"They don't think they've done anything wrong; they admit what they've done openly," Madang Police Commander Anthony Wagambie told The Associated Press in a report published The Telegraph of London.

The alleged cannibals -- eight of whom are women -- ate their victims' brains raw and made soup from their penises, according to the report. The 29 people were part of a group of about 1,000 who are against the sorcerers charging increasingly higher fees, the AFP news service reported.

"We ate their brains raw and took body parts such as livers, hearts, penis and others back to the hausman (traditional men's houses) for our chief trainers to create other powers for the members to use," one of those arrested said, according to AFP.

To hire a witch doctor to reveal a cause of death or cast out an evil spirit, one must pay 1,000 kina ($475) cash, AFP reported, along with a pig and a bag of rice, but some sorcerers were also asking for sex as payment.

"It's against our traditional ethics and morals for a sorcerer to have intercourse with a man's wife or teenage daughter," a local cult leader in the Tangi area, inland from Madang province on Papua New Guinea's northeast coast, said, according to AFP.

The suspects are in custody, police said, and the case was adjourned until Aug. 17. Murder is punishable by death in the poor South Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea, The Telegraph reported.

Wagambie told the AP four of the seven victims were murdered last week, adding that no remains had been recovered.

"They're probably all eaten up," he said.

Canadian police: Human head belongs to dismemberment victim of porn actor Luka Magnotta

Luka Magnotta, the Canadian porn actor suspected of killing and dismembering another man, made his first appearance in a Montreal courthouse. CBC's Peter Akman reports.

The human head discovered in a Montreal park during the weekend belongs to Chinese student Jun Lin, allegedly dismembered by porn actor Luka Rocco Magnotta in one of Canada's most gruesome slayings in recent memory, police said Wednesday.

A Montreal police spokeswoman said medical tests showed the remains were those of Lin and confirmed local media reports saying the body part in question was a head.

    Montreal Police via AP

In this photo provided by Montreal Police, Luka Rocco Magnotta is taken by police from a Canadian military plane to a waiting van on June 18 in Mirabel, Quebec.

Lin's hands and feet were mailed to the offices of political parties in Ottawa and to schools in Vancouver, while his torso was found in a pile of garbage. His head had been missing until late Sunday.

Information obtained over the course of the investigation led police to find the head in Angrignon Park, a 110-acre green space in Montreal’s Ville Emard/La Salle district. The park has several densely wooded areas and is just a few kilometers from Magnotta’s apartment in N.D.G.

Investigators say Magnotta, 29, posted a video online showing him having sex with the dismembered corpse. A second, unedited version of the video seen by police shows him eating parts of the body. Police say Magnotta and Lin were in a relationship.

Human head found in Magnotta cannibal killing case?

A makeshift memorial for Lin Jun, murdered Chinese student, close to Concordia University pictured on June 11 in Montreal, Canada. Luka Magnotta is accused of dismembering Lin and mailing the body parts to political parties and schools.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Police found what appears to be a human head in a park in Montreal and are investigating whether it is the missing head of a Chinese student who they say was dismembered by a Canadian low-budget porn actor, an official said Sunday.

Luka Magnotta is accused of dismembering his lover Jun Lin and mailing the body parts to political parties and schools. He pleaded not guilty last month.

“It’s too early to confirm if this finding has anything to do with the (Lin) homicide,” Constable Anie Lemieux of the Montreal police told the Montreal Gazette. “We’re waiting on lab results to determine whether what we found are human remains.”

Information obtained over the course of the investigation led police to Angrignon Park, a 110-acre green space in Montreal’s Ville Emard/La Salle district. The park has several densely wooded areas and is just a few kilometres from Magnotta’s apartment in N.D.G.

A  police official said Sunday it appears to be human and look like a head, according to a National Post report.

Police have been questioning Magnotta with the hope that they would find out the location of the head.

Investigators say Magnotta, 29, posted a video online showing him having sex with the dismembered corpse. A second, unedited version of the video seen by police shows him eating parts of the body. Police say Magnotta and Lin were in a relationship.

The case became known when a package containing a severed foot was found at Canada's ruling Conservative Party headquarters on May 29. That same day, a hand was discovered at a postal facility, addressed to the Liberal Party of Canada.

Lin's torso was found in a suitcase at a garbage dump in Montreal outside Magnotta's apartment building.

The Canadian porn actor suspected of murdering and dismembering his former boyfriend pleaded not guilty to all five charges against him in a courtroom in Montreal last month. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

Did Canada's alleged cannibal killer Luka Magnotta strike in LA?

About a week later, a missing foot and hand were found mailed to two schools in Vancouver. Police said notes were included in most of the packages but declined to say what they said.

Magnotta, who fled to Europe before the body was discovered, spent a few days partying in Paris before moving on to Berlin, where he was caught last month as he read stories about himself at an Internet cafe. He did not contest his extradition from Germany and arrived in Montreal last month on a Canadian military plane.

Lin's family arrived in Montreal last month and attended a memorial service last week. Lin, 33, studied computer science student at Montreal's Concordia University.

Did Canada's alleged cannibal killer Luka Magnotta strike in LA?

    By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

Police in Canada investigating the horrific murder and dismemberment of a student have been contacted by Los Angeles police officers about a similar slaying of a 66-year-old man, whose body was found under the famous Hollywood sign, according to reports.

The Toronto Star reported that 29-year-old porn film actor Luka Rocco Magnotta, the man suspected of killing of Chinese student Jun Lin, may have lived in Los Angeles at one time. Montreal police told the paper that he had lived somewhere on the U.S. West Coast.

In late January, the remains of a retired airline worker were found in Los Angeles. The body of Hervey Medellin, 66, had been found by dog walkers near the Hollywood sign after one of the dogs found a plastic bag containing his severed head.

Victim identified in Hollywood severed head case

"The body parts are the common denominator here," Los Angeles police spokesman Officer Lyle Knight said, according to the Star. "That's why our investigators want to talk to the Canadians. We want to know if his whereabouts included Hollywood because we understand he was in the acting field and Hollywood being the acting and movie mecca, we want to know."

Los Angeles police told ABC News that Medellin was openly gay, and noted that Medellin's hands and feet had also been cut off.

The similarities between the Los Angeles killing and the Canada murder four months later are striking. Lin, 33, who was studying computer science at Concordia University in Montreal, was killed in May. His hands and feet were sent in the mail to schools in Vancouver and political offices in Ottawa, while his torso was found in a suitcase in Montreal. His head has not been found.

Canada police: Notes mailed with body parts

Investigators say Magnotta, who was Lin's lover, videotaped the killing and dismemberment in his apartment and posted it online. The video also shows the suspect eating parts of the body, police said.

After two Vancouver schools received packages in the mail containing body parts, authorities are investigating whether there is a connection with Luka Magnotta, the Canadian porn star arrested in Berlin for allegedly murdering and dismembering an acquaintance. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Fugitive Canadian porn actor found in Berlin reading about self

    AP Photo / Interpol

Luka Rocco Magnotta is accused of videotaping a gruesome murder before posting it to the Internet.

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 10:40 pm ET: When German police confronted a fugitive Canadian porn actor accused of killing and dismembering a Chinese student, he resisted until he admitted, "You got me."

Luka Magnotta, 29, was being held in Berlin, Germany's capital city, on Monday. He was spotted at an Internet cafe in the Neukölln district, according to officials in the German capital.

    Follow @msnbc_world

Magnotta had spent two hours reading coverage about himself at an Internet cafe when he was detained.

"We knew and always said that he used the web to glorify himself,” Montreal police spokesman Ian Lafreniere told the Toronto Star.

Interpol issued an arrest warrant on Thursday for Magnotta, who faces first-degree murder charges over the videotaped death of Jun Lin, a 32-year-old Chinese student whose body parts were mailed to two political parties in Ottawa.

German police spokesman Stefan Redlich said seven uniformed police were sent to the Neukölln district after the suspect was recognized by a cafe employee. "They talked to the individual and said they wanted to see some identification. He tried to give them a false name, but the police insisted, so he said, 'You've got me,' and we arrested him," he said.

Kadir Anlayisli, the employee who recognized Magnotta, told a Turkish newspaper cited by the Toronto Star, “He was wearing sunglasses for a while, but I was sure that he was the wanted man."

Surveillance camera footage of the German Internet cafe obtained by The Associated Press showed Magnotta casually walking into the shop at noon local time, wearing jeans, a green hoodie sweater and sunglasses.

He briefly spoke to the Internet cafe's desk person, who directed him to his assigned computer with the number 25 where he would later be spotted reading the news about his case.

Paris police probe sighting of fugitive Canadian porn actor wanted for murder

Anlayisli told the Star he wasn't sure if it was Magnotta, adding that the man had an "ice cold gaze."

He worried about calling police initially, worried he had made an error. Even so he looked out for police officers who might be passing by. When he spotted a van of officers, "they looked at me like I was joking," he told the Star.

Ultimately, seven German police officers walked into the shop.

On the camera footage, three police officers accompany the handcuffed Magnotta a couple of minutes after they entered the venue. Magnotta calmly walks alongside them, again wearing sunglasses.

Redlich, the police spokesman, said Magnotta would be detained overnight and that a judge would decide the next steps on Tuesday.

    Gore website
Montreal police say Magnotta and Jun were both in the video, which was posted on a Canadian website that specializes in gore.

Authorities say Magnotta filmed the Chinese student's murder and posted it online. The video shows a man with an ice pick stabbing another naked, bound male. He also dismembers the corpse and performs sexual acts with it in what police called a horrifying video.

The warning signs apparently were already there. For nearly two years animal activists had been looking for a man who tortured and killed cats and posted videos of his cruelty online. Since Jun Lin's murder, Montreal police have released a photo from the video which they say is of Magnotta.

Magnotta was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2005, but the charges were dropped, the lawyer who represented him at the time said.

In a crime scene Montreal police say is the worst they have seen, his Montreal apartment included a bloody mattress and pools of blood on the floor and in the refrigerator. The police said a janitor found a torso with no head or limbs in a suitcase in an alley behind the building.

Toronto lawyer Peter Scully said he represented Magnotta in a fraud case in 2004 and a sexual assault case in 2005.

"I've had lots of creepy characters and Eric did not stand out as one of them," he said. Scully refers to his client by his previous name, Eric Newman.

But Nina Arsenault, a Toronto transsexual who said she had a relationship with Magnotta over a decade ago, described him as a drug user with a temper, who sometimes turned his anger on himself, hitting himself on the head, and other parts of his body.

While Magnotta described himself in an online video interview with a site called "Naked News" as a stripper and male escort, Lin was registered as an undergraduate in the engineering department and computer science at Concordia University in Montreal.

Video: 'Cannibal killer' is target of manhunt
Authorities believe that a decomposing foot mailed to the headquarters of the governing Conservative Party in Ottawa on Tuesday and a hand found inside a package at a postal depot are parts of the same person.

Meantime, Interpol hailed the arrest Monday as a showcasing of the value of international police cooperation.

At the request of Canadian authorities, Interpol issued a so-called Red Notice for Magnotta on Thursday, and he was detained four days later in Berlin.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Paris police probe sighting of fugitive Canadian porn actor wanted for murder

An international manhunt is underway for Luke Magnotta, a Canadian adult film actor who police say murdered and dismembered an acquaintance, posted video of the crime online, and mailed body parts to Canadian political offices. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports and former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt offers analysis.

    By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

Updated at 8:19 a.m. ET: Police in Paris are investigating claims that fugitive Canadian porn actor accused of killing and dismembering a Chinese student has been staying in the French capital.

Luka Rocco Magnotta is suspected of murdering the man in Montreal, making a video of the attack and sending the victim's dismembered body parts in the mail - including posting a foot to the headquarters of the country's Conservative Party.

Magnotta is wanted by authorities in Canada for first-degree murder and other charges. Interpol has put Magnotta on the equivalent of its most-wanted list, The Associated Press reported Sunday.

Police believe Magnotta, 29, fled to France on May 26. Police identified the victim as Chinese university student Jun Lin, 33.

    Follow @msnbc_world

An official in the Paris prosecutor's office, speaking on condition of anonymity because of office policy, told the AP police were looking into alleged sightings in Paris but had no additional details.

French newspaper Le Parisien reported on Sunday that the manager of a bar in the 17th arrondissement of Paris saw Magnotta in his bar on Wednesday night and that Magnotta spent two nights at a nearby hotel.

Luka Rocco Magnotta is wanted by police in connection with a murder in Montreal.

It also reported that police believe Magnotta committed two thefts from shops in the neighborhood. The Le Parisien report could not be confirmed by police on Sunday.

On Friday, police in France told NBC News that Magnotta could have taken a car and driven to another country.

Love behind bars: Infamous Swedish cannibal hopes to marry vampire

    By msnbc.com staff

Two infamous Swedish murderers, the "Skara Cannibal" and the "Vampire Woman," hope to get married, according to Expressen, a Swedish newspaper.

The couple met at their high-security psychiatric ward in eastern Sweden, the paper said, and flirted over Internet chat rooms.

”We got together on November 13th. 'Do you want to be my girlfriend?' he asked on MSN. Then we decided to get engaged, which we did on December 9th,” Michelle Gustafsson, aka the "Vampire Woman," told Expressen.

Gustafsson was convicted in 2010 of the stabbing death of a father of four in Stockholm, the paper said. She wrote chilling lyrics on her blog about killing people and posted pictures of herself dressed as a vampire with bloody lips.

Isakin Jonsson, known as the ”Skara Cannibal,” was convicted in March 2011 of killing of his girlfriend, Helle Christensen, a mother of five, Expressen said. After stabbing her to death and cutting off body parts, he ate some of them.

“I love Michelle. I have never met anyone like her. I would like to lead a non-criminal life,” Jonsson told Expressen.

It is unclear if the couple will be released anytime soon. According to the prison hospital, some inmates have been there for 20 years.

Even so, the couple hopes to live together at some point.

“We want to get to live together, keep dogs and spend time on our hobbies, piercing and tattoos,” Gustafsson told Expressen.
