Report: Six suspects held over another India bus gang rape

Indian police personnel present six arrested men, accused of a gang rape in Punjab state, Sunday.

    By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

Updated at 8:39 p.m. ET: Six suspects have been arrested over the rape of a woman on a bus in northern India, just weeks after the gang-rape and murder of a student sparked nationwide protests, reports said early Sunday.

    Follow @NBCNewsWorld

Police say a 29-year-old woman was a lone passenger on a bus to her village in northern Punjab state on Friday when she was attacked, The Associated Press reported.

The driver and conductor allegedly refused to stop at her village and instead drove her to a desolate location. They took her to a nearby building where they were joined by friends and raped her repeatedly, the AP said.

The woman went to a police station in the morning to file a complaint. Six of the seven suspects have been arrested, Reuters reported.

The issue of rape has taken center stage in India, where a 26-year-old woman said she was raped through the night Friday by six men. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

The apparent case follows the gang rape and fatal beating of a medical student on a New Delhi bus in December, which sparked protests in India over national attitudes to violence against women and made headlines around the world.

Despite the heightened awareness of the way sex crimes are dealt with, the Times of India reported that the latest victim was publicly named by police in Punjab – a move the newspaper described as “completely insensitive.”

"Six men have been arrested on allegations of having raped a 29-year-old woman... after forcibly taking her to an unknown location on the night of January 11," local police officer Raj Jeet Singh said, according to Agence France-Press.

Police say they arrested six suspects on Saturday and are searching for one other, AFP said.

Accused associate of 'Lord of War' arms dealer Viktor Bout caught in Australia

By Larry Neumeister and Stephen Braun, The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- An associate of a notorious Russian arms dealer was arrested in Australia and charged with conspiring to buy planes so that weapons could be transported to the world's bloodiest conflicts, a U.S. prosecutor announced Thursday.

Syrian-born American Richard Ammar Chichakli was arrested Wednesday at the request of U.S. authorities on charges that he conspired with Russian arms merchant Viktor Bout and others to try to buy the planes from two U.S. companies.

    Sukree Sukplang / Reuters file

Suspected Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout speaks to the media after arriving at a Bangkok criminal court August 20, 2010, ahead of an expected appeal court verdict on whether to extradite him to the U.S.

His arrest was first confirmed by the Australian Fairfax Media news organization, which reported Thursday that he was arrested in Melbourne after applying for a post in the government Protective Service Office, a law enforcement agency. The news service reported that he said nothing during a Thursday hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

A lawyer for Chichakli told officials that his client had identified himself as Jehad Almustafa. Chichakli was held pending the processing of a U.S. extradition request.

Victoria state police spokeswoman Jessica Rosewarne confirmed Chichakli was caught after applying for the government post.

"He was identified as a person of interest through routine background checks as part of the application process," she said. "He had not been offered employment with Victoria police or started any training."

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, the chief federal prosecutor in New York, said Chichakli "consorted with the world's most notorious arms trafficker in the purchase of aircraft that would be used to transport weapons to some of the world's bloodiest conflict zones, in violation of international sanctions."

Michele M. Leonhart, administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, said the international law enforcement community has long recognized Chichakli as a key criminal facilitator in Bout's global weapons trafficking regime.

"His arrest means the world is safer and more secure," she said in a release.

    Merchant of Death
Bout is a former Soviet air officer dubbed the Merchant of Death because of his 1990s-era notoriety for running a fleet of aging Soviet-era cargo planes to conflict-ridden hotspots in Africa. He also inspired the arms dealer character played by Nicolas Cage in the 2005 film "Lord of War."

Bout, convicted of conspiracy relating to the support of a Colombian terrorist organization, was sentenced in Manhattan last year to 25 years in prison but maintained he was a legitimate businessman.

    Follow @NBCNewsWorld

An indictment against Chichakli in U.S. District Court in Manhattan and other court documents accuse Chichakli of working as a close associate of Bout since at least the mid-1990s to assemble a fleet of cargo planes capable of shipping weapons and military equipment to various parts of the world, including Africa, South America and the Middle East.

Prosecutors say the arms have helped fuel conflicts and support regimes in Afghanistan, Angola, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Sudan.

Over the years, Chichakli has weaved a colorful biography of his past but often repudiated his comments under the glare of law enforcement scrutiny.

He has claimed to have befriended a young Osama bin Laden during college days at Riyadh University in Saudi Arabia. He also claimed a stint in the U.S. Army, replete with intelligence training and service in the first Gulf War.

The indictment accuses Chichakli and Bout of violating sanctions by arranging to buy two Boeing aircraft from U.S. companies in 2007. It says they electronically transferred more than $1.7 million through banks in New York and into bank accounts in the U.S., though the money was blocked by the U.S. Department of the Treasury before it reached the aviation companies' accounts.

The Treasury Department had imposed an asset freeze against Chichakli in April 2005 as part of larger financial sanctions aimed at the Bout network's dealings with the dictatorial regime of Liberian President Charles Taylor. The department called Chichakli, who once ran a small conglomerate of Texas-based businesses from a Dallas suburb, "Bout's U.S.-based chief financial officer."

If convicted, Chichakli could face up to 20 years in prison on each of nine counts, including conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, money laundering conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy and wire fraud.

BBC legend Jimmy Savile committed at least 214 sex crimes, police say

    Leslie Lee / Getty Images

Iconic British television presenter Jimmy Savile shows off his OBE award after being honored at London's Buckingham Palace on March 21, 1972.

    By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

LONDON — Former BBC star Jimmy Savile was one of Britain’s "most prolific" sex offenders, committing at least 214 sex crimes against victims aged as young as 8, police said Friday.

Investigators released a report cataloging more than 50 years of rapes and indecent assaults. It accused the late television and radio host of using his celebrity status to gain access to vulnerable children in hospitals, nightclubs and even a hospice for the terminally ill.

Almost all the allegations have been made since Savile’s death in 2011, even though the offences date back as far as 1955.

The revelations have triggered a scandal in Britain and prompted a string of public inquiries into how some allegations were not properly investigated while Savile was alive.

"It is now clear that Savile was hiding in plain sight and using his celebrity status and fundraising activity to gain uncontrolled access to vulnerable people across six decades," the police-led report said. "For a variety of reasons the vast majority of his victims did not feel they could speak out and it’s apparent that some of the small number who did had their accounts dismissed by those in authority including parents and carers."

Savile, who raised an estimated $55 million for charity, achieved fame on BBC shows including "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It." In 1990, he was given a knighthood by Britain's Queen Elizabeth and received a Papal Knighthood at the Vatican.

For 20 years, Jimmy Savile's children's show was a highlight of Saturday night family TV on the BBC. But now, British police say 300 people have come forward with claims that Savile abused them during his 60-year broadcasting career. NBC's Annabel Roberts reports.

The offences span 28 police forces across the U.K. and the scale of his abuse is so vast that the report included a map and an index of the alleged locations.

The number of people Savile victimized "simply beggars belief," Peter Watt, co-author of the report [PDF link] and director of children’s charity NSPCC told ITV News.

"He is without doubt one of the most prolific sex offenders we have ever come across and every number represents a victim that will never get justice now he is dead. But with this report we can at least show his victims that they have been taken seriously and their suffering has been recognized."

In total, more than 450 have people have come forward to police with allegations of abuse involving Savile. Most but not all victims have been interviewed and to date 214 criminal offences have been formally recorded. They included 34 rapes or serious sexual assaults, according to the report. The last incident recorded occurred in 2009. His victims ranged in age from 8 to 47.

    The report concluded:

“The details provided by the victims of his abuse paint the picture of a mainly opportunistic individual who used his celebrity status as a powerful tool to coerce or control them, preying on the vulnerable or star-struck for his sexual gratification. Sadly, this type of behavior is not uncommon in any society - sexual abuse, whether in street gangs, though trafficking or within families and institutions, often involves the use of powerful coercion, intimidation and manipulation to exploit the vulnerable."

In a separate development, Britain’s most senior prosecutor apologized to some of the women abused by Savile, revealing that police missed three chances to take him to trial while he was alive.

Keir Starmer, the director of public prosecutions, said police had been "unjustifiably cautious" investigation four allegations involving girls as young as 14 who said they were abused by Savile in the 1970s.

He said he hoped the organization’s internal review would prove to be a "watershed" moment in the handling of child abuse cases.

    In a statement, he said:

"Many people feel that for sexual offences, where it is 'one person's word against another's' and there is no or little scientific or other evidence to support the allegation, no prosecution should be brought. But this is to ignore the reality of many sexual offences which, by their nature, do not usually take place in front of witnesses and result in no meaningful scientific evidence. Taking a cautious approach to all complainants, on the ground that some might be making a false allegation of a sexual offence, can have the consequence that a prosecution for a true complaint may not take place."

Bomb thrown at car in Tel Aviv, injuring 7

Police in Israel believe a car bomb explosion in Tel Aviv was an assassination attempt against an alleged crime leader. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By Jim Maceda, Correspondent, NBC News

A bomb exploded in a car next to a bus in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Thursday, causing injuries but no fatalities.

At least seven people were wounded by the explosion, which happened at the junction of Menachem Begin Street and Shaul Hamelech Street just after 1 p.m. local time (6 a.m. ET).

A witness said a person riding a motorcycle threw the device at the car.

Police begin to cordon off a street in Tel Aviv as a car burns following an explosion, in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Thursday.

Police officials believe the attack was a criminal act aimed at specific individuals rather than an act of terrorism.

Radio reports in Israel said the blast may have targeted a member of a well-known criminal family, who escaped injury.

Extra garlic and hold the taxes; Sweden goes after smuggling suspects

    By The Associated Press

Swedish prosecutors have issued international arrest warrants for two Britons suspected of masterminding a smuggling ring involving over a ton of Chinese garlic.

    Follow @NBCNewsWorld

The men first shipped the garlic to Norway by boat, where it entered the country duty-free since it was considered to be in transit, prosecutor Thomas Ahlstrand said Wednesday. They then drove the approximately 1.2 tons of garlic across the expansive Norwegian-Swedish border, avoiding customs checks and thus Swedish import duties.

Ahlstrand said the men avoided more than $13.1 million in Swedish taxes through the scheme. A lengthy police investigation led to the identification of the two Britons allegedly behind the Swedish operation, which took place in 2009-10.

It was not the first time smugglers had shown a preference for garlic from China, which accounts for nearly 80 percent of world output and is often significantly cheaper than local varieties.

In 2010, Polish authorities seized six containers with 144 tons of Chinese garlic that had been smuggled into the country via the Netherlands.

It was not immediately clear whether the Polish smuggling was linked to the Swedish case.

India gang-rape case: Accused duo offer to testify against others

Five men, accused of the rape and murder of a medical student in India have appeared in court. If convicted they face the death penalty. The attack on a bus three weeks ago sparked outrage and violent protests in the country. ITV's Geraint Vincent reports.

    By NBC News wire services

NEW DELHI — Five men accused of the gang rape and murder of an Indian student appeared in court on Monday to hear charges against them, after two of them offered evidence possibly in return for a lighter sentence in the case, which is at the center of a global outcry.

The five men, along with a teenager, are accused of raping the 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a moving bus in New Delhi. She died two weeks later on December 28 in a Singapore hospital.

Two of the accused, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta, moved an application on Saturday requesting they be made "approvers," or informers against the other accused, a public prosecutor in the case, Rajiv Mohan, told Reuters.

Sharma and Gupta, along with co-accused Mukesh Kumar, Ram Singh and Akshay Thakur, have already been charged with murder, rape and abduction along with other offences. Prosecutor Mohan told Reuters he was seeking the death sentence in the case given the "heinous" nature of the crime.

"The five accused persons deserve not less than the death penalty," he said. His views echoing public sentiment and calls from the victim's family.

A police van carrying five men accused of the gang rape and murder of an Indian student arrives at a court in New Delhi,Monday.

India gang-rape victim's father: Hang the 'monsters' responsible

Members of the bar association in Saket district, where the case is being heard, have vowed not to represent them. Ahead of Monday's court appearance, the five were still believed to be without defense lawyers despite extensive interrogations by the police, who have said they have recorded confessions.

Supreme Court lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma stood up to offer representation to the men and was booed by other lawyers in the packed courtroom, where media and advocates gathered before the men were due to appear.

Indian authorities have filed rape and murder charges against five men accused of the gang rape of a woman on a New Delhi bus. Government officials have promises new measures to protect women in the nation's capital and the crime has sparked protests and raised demands for tough new rape laws. ITN's Geraint Vincent reports.

Their lack of representation so far could give grounds for appeal later should they be found guilty. Similar cases have resulted in acquittals years after convictions.

"The accused has a right to a lawyer from point of arrest - the investigations are going on, statements being taken, it is totally illegal," said Colin Gonsalves, a senior Supreme Court advocate and director of Delhi's Human Rights Law Network.

    Chemical castration?
A government panel is considering suggestions to make the death penalty mandatory for rape and introducing forms of chemical castration for the guilty. It is due to make its recommendations by Jan. 23.

Senior leaders of most Indian states on Friday came out in support of a plan to lower to 16 the age that minors can be tried as adults - in response to fury that the maximum penalty the accused youth could face is three years detention.

Courts are swamped with a backlog of cases in the country of 1.2 billion people and trials often take more than five years to complete, so the launch by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir of six fast-track courts in the capital to deal with sexual offences was widely greeted as a welcome move.

Protests continue in India demanding greater protection for women following the death of a gang-rape victim, the suspects are charged with murder. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

The case has taken sexual violence — a subject long hidden in the shadows of Indian society — and thrust it into the light.

For decades, women have had little choice but to walk away when groped in a crowded bus or train, or to simply cringe as someone tosses an obscene comment their way. Even if they haven't experienced explicit sexual abuse themselves, they live with the fear that it could happen to them or a loved one.

'Nobody helped us for an hour,' India rape witness says

Following the Dec. 16 attack, hundreds of thousands of Indians — both men and women — poured onto the streets of cities across the country, holding candlelight vigils and rallies demanding that authorities take tougher action to create a safe environment for women.

The harassment and violence faced daily by millions of Indian women is a deeply entrenched part of a culture that values men over women.

The mistreatment starts early — with sex-selective abortions and even female infanticides that have wildly skewed India's gender ratio. India's 2011 census showed that the country had 914 girls under age 6 for every 1,000 boys.

Hundreds of women marched in New Delhi to mourn the death of a 23-year-old rape victim while protesters in Mumbai raided a bar serving a drink called "Rapist." NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Indian movies and television shows routinely trivialize women. In the often suggestive songs and dances of Bollywood films, it's not unusual for the leading man and a gang of his buddies to chase a coyly reluctant actress, touching, pulling and throwing themselves on top of her.

On television, the most popular soap operas show the ideal Indian woman as meek, submissive and accepting of her traditional role inside the home.

    'Everyone's issue'
Any discussion of sexual violence has so far been taboo. In the past, politicians have said that women should dress modestly and not stay out late to avoid rape and molestations.

Ranjana Kumari, director of the Center for Social Research and a longtime women's rights activist, said the fact that boys and men had joined the protests "gives us hope."

"Then it becomes everyone's issue, and not just a women's issue," she said.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn 'pimping' case to go ahead

    By Reuters

The prosecution of former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn for pimping is to go ahead, French judges ruled Wednesday.

    Diego Azubel / EPA, file

Dominique Strauss-Kahn in a December 2012 file photo.

The ruling was given just over a week after Strauss-Kahn settled a separate civil case in New York with a hotel maid who accused him of attempted rape in May 2011, ending his French presidential hopes and career at the IMF.

While the New York settlement brought his U.S. legal woes to an end, the latest decision by the court in Douai in northern France means he remains under the legal spotlight at home.

"Dominique Strauss-Kahn's defense team is certain that he will ultimately be cleared of these absurd accusations of pimping," lawyer Henri Leclerc said in a statement Wednesday, adding that he planned to appeal to France's supreme court.

Strauss-Kahn denies wrongdoing in all the charges against him.

He is under fire about sex parties with prostitutes in the so-called Carlton Affair, named after a hotel in northern France at the center of the inquiry.

His lawyers argue that consorting with prostitutes is not illegal and that investigators have no grounds for pursuing him on the basis that his behavior could be construed as pimping, which is illegal.

Under French law, prosecution does not automatically lead to trial, but it often takes months or years before a decision is made.

In the United States, Strauss-Kahn's legal troubles ended within 18 months of a sexual-assault complaint filed by New York Sofitel hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo.

U.S. prosecutors dropped criminal charges in August 2011, saying they had worries about Guinea-born Diallo's credibility as a witness in court after discovering that she had lied in the past on tax and immigration documents. She opened civil proceedings that ended last week with a settlement for an undisclosed sum.

A former New York hotel maid has settled her sexual assault lawsuit against former International Monetary Fund Chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, although the amount of the settlement was kept confidential. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

Pope's grief at 'senseless' Conn. gun tragedy

NBC's Keir Simmons takes a look at how countries around the world are mourning the unbelievable tragedy that has shaken Newtown, Conn.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Pope Benedict XVI spoke of his deep sadness at the Connecticut school shooting during his Sunday address to the crowd in St. Peter's Square, Vatican City.

Twenty-eight people, including the gunman, died in Friday's shooting spree in the town of Newtown, Connecticut, including 20 children and six adults killed at the school and one adult killed at a nearby site, police said.

"I was deeply saddened by Friday's senseless violence in Newtown, Connecticut,” he told the crowd.

“I assure the families of the victims, especially those who lost a child, of my closeness in prayer. May the God of consolation touch their hearts and ease their pain.

“During this Advent Season, let us dedicate ourselves more fervently to prayer and to acts of peace. Upon those affected by this tragedy, and upon each of you, I invoke God's abundant blessings!"

    By Reuters

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras -- Anti-drug agents on Saturday broke up an alleged gang of synthetic drug producers and seized $100 million in assets, a Honduras government spokesman said.

Anti-drug trafficking agents carried out raids on 24 sites in the northern part of the country, seizing 700 heads of cattle and 150 vehicles in one of the biggest organized crime seizures in the last decade, spokesman Carlos Vallecillo said.

Vallecillo said the group laundered money through companies and property, but did not specify which drug cartel the group belonged to.

The agents detained a local police official, a Honduran civilian, and two Colombian pilots, he added.

The Mexican government's campaign to tame its drug cartels has driven Mexican drug traffickers to set up shop in Honduras. Colombian Cartels also operate in the country.

More than 8,000 unaccompanied migrant youths – mostly from Central America -- have been taken into custody this year, double the number taken into custody at this time last year. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

Criminal violence in the Central American nation has escalated thanks in part to the Mexican cartels' presence. According to the United Nations, Honduras has the highest per capita homicide rate in the world, with 86 homicides for every 100,000 inhabitants.

Cops shoot dead 7 robbers in South Africa

    By Reuters

JOHANNESBURG - An elite South African police unit shot dead seven men who tried to rob a cash depot in western Johannesburg on Saturday evening, a spokesman for the unit said.

Nine others were injured and under police guard in hospital, a spokesman of the unit known as Hawks told Reuters.

Police also confiscated 11 vehicles and four firearms.

"We believe we got the kingpin down. We are convinced that we got all the robbers - dead or arrested," Paul Ramaloko said.

The depot belonged to Protea Coin, a security company which runs a cash-in-transit business.

Crime is a chronic problem for South Africa. It has one of the highest murder rates in the world outside a war zone.

About 40 percent of the adult population is jobless - a percentage expected to rise substantially in the coming years - and this is seen driving crime and widening economic inequality.

Officials in South Africa confirmed today that 34 people were killed and 78 injured when police opened fire on striking uranium miners and supporters they allege charged at them. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

I love stories with happy endings. Too bad they had to take some of them into custody. There is still hope that the rest will die in prison. Think of all the money saved by the government. Good police work.

'Unimaginable' fear: Man jailed over collar bomb hoax on Australia girl

    Dean Lewins / EPA, file

Detectives drive collar bomb suspect Paul Peters from Sydney International Airport in September 2011, after he was extradited from the U.S.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

A man who strapped a fake bomb around the neck of a Sydney schoolgirl and then fled to the United States was jailed for 13 and a half years on Tuesday after an Australian court ruled he had instilled unimaginable fear into his victim.

The case sparked an international manhunt and led to a tense 10 hours for teenager Madeleine Pulver, 18, after the man broke into her family's luxury home in August 2011 and chained what he said was a bomb around her neck, leaving a note demanding money.

After extensive tests, bomb technicians determined the box was harmless.

Police in the United States arrested Paul Douglas Peters, 52, in Kentucky at his former wife’s home about two weeks after the incident by tracking him through email accounts. In September 2011 he was extradited to Australia.

Defense lawyers said Peters had suffered depression in the months before the attack and had no memory of his actions. Prosecutors said Peters had planned to target a neighbor of the Pulver family, and broke into the wrong house.

A young woman in Sydney says a man wearing a ski mask strapped an explosive device to her neck. TODAY.com's Dara Brown reports.

"He would have appreciated the enormity of what he was doing and the terrible effect and consequences of his actions on the victim," Sentencing District Court Judge Peter Zahra said. "The fear instilled can only be described as unimaginable."

He sentenced Peters, who pleaded guilty to “aggravated break and enter”, to 13 years and six months in prison, with a minimum 10 years to be served before he can apply for parole.

Before the attack, Peters was the CEP of Appen Butler Hill, a company that provides language and voice-recognition software and services.

The legal ordeal is over for fake collar bomb victim Madeleine Pulver after her attacker, Paul Peters, pleaded guilty.

Outside the court, Pulver said she was pleased Peters would not be able to hurt anyone else, and that the court acknowledged the impact of his crime on her family.

"It was good to hear the judge acknowledge the trauma (Peters) has put my family and me through," said Pulver, who plans to attend university in Sydney next year. "It's been a surprise to me that this year has been much harder than last year, but I’m lucky enough to have a wonderful family and friends and we are all making great progress.”

13 1/2 years for this terrorizing crime. Not long enough. I hope his time is spent getting attacked by his fellow inmates.

Man arrested with 220 diamonds in belly - South Africa police

    By Reuters

JOHANNESBURG -- South African police have arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of attempting to smuggle 220 diamonds out of the country in his digestive tract through Johannesburg's main airport.

    Follow @NBCNewsWorld

The Lebanese national bound for Dubai had swallowed $2.25 million worth of polished diamonds before he was stopped at a security checkpoint at Africa's biggest airport and then relieved of his concealed cargo, police said.

"We used laxatives to remove the diamonds," police spokesman Paul Ramaloko said Thursday.

In March, police arrested another Lebanese national who was attempting to smuggle $1.69 million worth of diamonds out of South Africa.
