Report: American's car shot at following crash in Saudi Arabia

By Sami Aboudi and Eric Beech, Reuters

DUBAI -- A driver opened fire on a car driven by a U.S. citizen in northern Saudi Arabia after crashing into his vehicle, but there were no casualties, Saudi state news agency SPA reported late on Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear if the incident was a deliberate attack on the American or just a case of road rage.

"The Tabuk police received a report at around 1 p.m. (6 a.m. ET) that a car driven by a resident American citizen had been subjected to a crash and shooting from the driver of the other vehicle while driving on a road in the city of Tabuk," SPA quoted the local police chief as saying.

"There were no injuries but the car was damaged by the accident and shooting," it added.

The kingdom, a key regional U.S. ally and the world's top oil exporter, faced a campaign of attacks by al Qaeda militants targeting foreigners and government facilities between 2003 and 2006. Security forces crushed the militants, arresting and killing many and forcing others to flee the kingdom.

Cops: Driver plows into tourists, goes on deadly stabbing spree in upscale Guam shopping area

By Audrey McAvoy, The Associated Press

A man accused of killing two Japanese visitors and injuring a dozen others after crashing his car and stabbing people in a major tourist district in Guam has been arrested and faces multiple charges, police said Wednesday.

Chad Ryan DeSoto, 21, of Tamuning is accused of driving a Toyota Yaris onto a sidewalk and striking seven tourists Tuesday night at an upscale shopping area fronting the Outrigger Guam Resort in Tumon Bay, Guam police spokesman A.J. Balajadia said. DeSoto continued driving on the sidewalk, crashing into the wall of a convenience store. He then left his car and started stabbing people, police said.

DeSoto is charged with two counts of murder, 13 counts of attempted murder and 13 counts of aggravated assault, Balajadia said. No motive or other details on the investigation were released.

DeSoto was scheduled due to appear before a magistrate judge at the Superior Court of Guam on Wednesday to be formally charged.

Japan Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said 14 Japanese tourists were attacked, including two who died. Two of the injured have been released from the hospital after being treated, Suga said.

Japanese media reported the dead were two women aged 28 and 82 and the survivors included an 8-month-old baby.

An official with Japanese travel operator H.I.S. Co. said eight of its customers were injured in the attack -- including some with broken bones -- but none was killed.

The wreck and alleged knife attack among high-end boutiques and hotels in Tumon Bay's Pleasure Island district sent frightened hotel guests and others fleeing for safety.

A woman at a nearby café with friends told the Pacific Daily News she saw the car plow through the driveway and into a convenience store at the resort. Ashley Quichocho, 18, of Dededo said the driver got out, ran up to bystanders and began stabbing them.

"He started stabbing someone, and I started freaking out," Quichocho said. "He was just running back and forth stabbing people."

Quichocho said she ran to the second floor of the hotel with other guests to escape.

Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo issued a statement addressed to "the people of Japan" saying the perpetrator would be prosecuted "to the fullest extent of the law." Calvo said he would increase the police presence in the visitor district.

"This was an isolated incident -- something that just doesn't happen in our community," Calvo said. "We are shocked, we are grieving with the families, and we extend our deepest condolences to those hurt."

Guam, a U.S. territory and tropical island 1,500 miles south of Tokyo, is heavily dependent on tourism -- particularly from Japan -- for its economy.

The island has a population of about 180,000 and is home to major U.S. naval and air bases. The U.S. has plans to move several thousand Marines to Guam from the southern Japanese island of Okinawa.

Yes, it is absolutely horrific. Here's something that will rankle most people out there.....a car AND a knife were used in this crime of murder, mayhem, and terror. Not a single solitary gun was used.

'Quite surprised': Cops pull over speeding autobahn driver, discover mobile office

    Saarland State Police via AP

When German police pulled over a driver on the autobahn on Monday, they discovered his vehicle was wired up like a mobile office.

    By Andy Eckardt, NBC News

MAINZ, Germany -- Ever worry about getting caught by police using your cellphone while driving?

That was not enough of a risk for one German driver, who had an entire office installed in his FORD Mondeo station wagon.

Undercover highway police in southern Germany on Monday pulled over a 34-year-old IT specialist after he conducted an illegal passing maneuver and was going 80 miles per hour in a reduced 62-mile-per-hour zone on Germany's infamous super highway, the autobahn.

"The officers were quite surprised when they found a laptop, a printer and even a medium-size voltage transformer attached to a wood rack that was set up next to the center console," police spokesman Stephan Lassotta told NBC News.

In addition, the German highway patrol found two cellphones and a navigation system installed in the windshield of the driver's car.

"We could not prove that the driver had been using the equipment while driving, so he was not fined for that violation," Lassotta added.

Crazy gas prices driving German consumers mad

But the man, who was not identified by name, was asked to store the technical equipment in his trunk immediately, before being allowed to continue his journey. German law states that "unsecured items" in vehicles are dangerous and therefore not permitted.

The man now faces a fine of more than $170 for speeding and passing traffic in a right-hand lane, in accordance with German law.

Pentagon releases video of US troops interrogating bin Laden's driver

Pentagon video shows the interrogation of Osama bin Laden's driver, Salem Hamdan, in Afghanistan shortly after 9/11.

    By Jim Miklaszewski, NBC News

The Pentagon has released a 10-year-old video showing the interrogation of Osama bin Laden's driver, a Yemeni named Salem Hamdan.

The video, recorded shortly after his capture in Afghanistanin 2001, shows Hamdan in a sparse room, kneeling on what appears to be a dirt floor, handcuffed with a hood over his head.   An American soldier armed with an automatic weapon removes the hood and an interrogator off camera begins to question Hamdan in Arabic.  The video include chyrons with an English translation of the exchanges.

The interrogator asks Hamdan about weapons found in his car and support for al-Qaida.  Hamdan strenuously denies knowing anything about the weapons or al-Qaida operations.  The interrogation is measured, not overly aggressive, and there are no physical signs that Hamdan had been abused or tortured.  Hamdan appears at ease, almost relaxed.  He's given permission to readjust his sitting position to be more comfortable, and at one point starts interrogating the interrogator.

Hamdan was convicted of providing material support to al-Qaida in 2008, while a charge of conspiring with al-Qaida was dropped.  He was sentenced to 5 ½ years and released shortly thereafter because he had already spent 6 years in custody at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base detention camp in Cuba.

Hamdan returned to Yemen and is currently appealing his conviction on the grounds the charge against him did not constitute a war crime.

The Pentagon periodically releases transcripts and videos of evidence submitted to military commissions.

This video was released unannounced on April 12.  Pentagon officials insist the timing of the video release had nothing to do with Saturday's rearraignment of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, at Guantanamo.

I'd like them to release the waterboarding videos..... oh, that's right, the CIA/DOJ/military destroyed them all, but saved the ones that DON'T have warcrimes depicted on them.
