Report: Ex-BBC security guard among 4 charged with terrorism offences in UK

By NBC News staff and ITV News

LONDON -- Three men and a woman appeared in a British court on Thursday facing terrorism charges.

ITV News reported that Richard Dart, 29, Imran Mahmood, 21, and Jahangir Alom, 26, are accused of traveling to Pakistan for training in terrorism, traveling abroad to commit acts of terrorism and providing information about terrorism training and operational security while there.

Ruksana Begum, 22, is accused of possessing information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

Officials said they were arrested between July 5 - 7 in connection with offences alleged to have been committed from July 2010 until earlier this month.

Britain's Press Association news agency reported:

"One of the suspects lives in Stratford, east London, where the Olympics is being held, but Scotland Yard has said none of the alleged offences was linked to the Games."

London is due to host the Summer Olympics beginning July 27.

According to the Telegraph newspaper, Dart is a former BBC security guard. The Press Association reported that Dart "appeared in a BBC Three documentary after converting to Islam."

All four were remanded in custody during Thursday's appearance at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London.

Dart, Alom and Begum are due to appear in court again on July 31.
