Wojdan Shaherkani makes history as first Saudi Arabian woman in Olympics

    Kim Kyung-Hoon / Reuters

Saudi Arabia's Wojdan Shaherkani arrives ahead of her women's +78kg elimination round of 32 judo match against Puerto Rico's Melissa Mojica at the London 2012 Olympic Games on August 3, 2012.

Mitch Goldich, NBC Olympics reports — After a week of controversy and hand-wringing — first declaring she would fight without a hijab, then saying she would withdraw if not allowed to wear one — Wojdan Shaherkani finally made history this morning, as the first Saudi Arabian woman ever to participate in the Olympic Games.

The bout lasted less than two minutes as Puerto Rico's Melissa Mojica threw Shaherkani to her back with a match-ending ippon.  Shaherkani adjusted her head covering as she stood back up, and then shook Mojica's hand to rousing applause. Read the full story.

The crowd was friendly toward Shaherkani, cheering triumphantly when the PA announcer broke from his typical monotony of introductions to say, "The first woman ever from Saudi Arabia to compete in the Olympics, Shaherkani."

Boris Johnson, London mayor, stuck on a zip line

Rebecca Denton via @rebeccasbrain on Twitter

Rebecca Denton (rebeccasbrain on Twitter) wrote "Boris Johnson stuck on a zip line in Victoria Park. I kid you not." in her Tweet with this photo.

London Mayor Boris Johnson got stuck midair on a zip line Wednesday during a celebration for 2012 Olympic Games.

ITV, the British partner of NBC News, reported that Johnson had to be pulled the remainder of the way by people on the ground.

According to The Telegraph newspaper, Johnson was the first person to use the zip line, in Victoria Park, East London. "Get me a rope, get me a ladder," ITV quoted him as saying. "I think the brakes got stuck.”

Britain's funniest politician taken very seriously

The Telegraph said witnesses reported that Johnson spent the approximately five minutes suspended in the air waving two British flags and leading the audience in cheering the British Olympic team.

The newspaper quoted a spokesman for Johnson as saying the mayor "remained unbowed" by the incident. "The judges will rightly be marking him down for artistic impression,” the spokesman said.

The cause of the incident was not immediately clear.

London mayor Boris Johnson attempts to make a dramatic entrance at an Olympic party—but gets stranded on a zip wire instead. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

TODAY's Natalie Morales takes a look at how Internet users across the globe put their own spin on London mayor Boris Johnson's zip-line snag near the Olympic Park.

Olympic spirit on display as fans arrive for opening ceremonies in London

Fans of Ethiopia enjoy the atmosphere outside the Olympic stadium before the opening ceremony on July 27, in London.

The Associated Press reports that London greeted the world in a celebration of Old England that was stunning, imaginative, whimsical and dramatic — and cheeky, even featuring a stand-in for Queen Elizabeth II parachuting into Olympic Stadium. Moments later, the 86-year-old monarch herself stood solemnly while a children's choir serenaded her with "God Save the Queen," and members of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force raised the Union Jack.

London Olympic countdown enters final week

    Toby Melville / Reuters

With a week to go to the opening ceremony, a worker mows grass near the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, east London on July 20, 2012.

Reuters reports — The Olympic torch arrives in London on Friday a week before the Games begin, and organizers hope the media's focus will shift from security fiascos, travel disruptions, strike threats and poor weather to the thrill of the sporting contest.

Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Olympic organizing committee and a gold medal winner, said people were "overwhelmingly positive" about the buildup to the greatest show on earth, while London Mayor Boris Johnson told critics to "put a sock in it, fast". Continue reading.

Muay Thai boxing guides youth in Bangkok

Nicolas Asfouri / AFP - Getty Images

Muay Thai boxers fight in the Buriram province of Isan, Thailand on June 28, 2012. Muay Thai is deeply entwined with the history of Thailand itself, developed from the need for hand-to-hand combat centuries ago as a form of defense from perpetual invasions from neighboring countries.

Students from 96 Penang, a Muay Thai boxing camp, rest during their daily training session in Bangkok on June 26, 2012. The gym, located under an expressway overpass in a run-down slum area, has a fine reputation for developing and preparing fighters. Most of the students are sent by parents from Isan, a rural region in northeastern Thailand, in the hopes their sons will become good fighters and can help the family financially as many come from poor backgrounds.

My son has done this for almost six years. In school he's respectful of everyone but he will absolutely not tolerate a bully putting, or should I say, attempting to put their hands on him. He's only had to defend himself once in school and it ended as quickly as it started.

Grandma begins 103-mile swim from Cuba to Florida

British-Australian swimmer Penny Palfrey swims from 'La Marina Hemingway', Cuba, on June 29, with destination Florida, USA. Palfrey, 49, tries to swim across the Strait of Florida, without being protected by a shark cage in 40 to 50 hours.

British-Australian swimmer Penny Palfrey smiles as she is flashed a thumbs up at the start of her bid to complete a record swim from Cuba to Florida, in Havana, Cuba, on June 29. Palfrey aims to be the first woman to swim the Straits of Florida without the aid of a shark cage. Instead she's relying on equipment that surrounds her with an electrical field to deter the predators.

Reuters -- Marathon swimmer Penny Palfrey, a 49-year-old grandmother, dove into the clear waters of the Florida Straits on Friday to try to break her own world record by swimming 103 miles from Cuba to the United States without a shark cage.

With the just-risen sun casting an orange glow in the eastern sky, Palfrey dove into the calm sea from a rocky point at Havana's Hemingway Marina, then stroked methodically away as a handful of spectators looked on.

"Beautiful sea, beautiful sunrise, it's a lovely morning in Cuba," the compact, muscular Palfrey told reporters just before entering the water.

Would you call a highly experienced 49 year old male marathon swimmer with grandchildren a "grandfather swimming from Cuba to Florida"? This is so stupid to keep calling Penny a grandmother or even define her by that! In which century do we live? Is this not sexism?

England's national football team manager Roy Hodgson appears in a 108 foot tall (33 metre) reproduction of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue above the White Cliffs of Dover, June 7. Irish bookmakers Paddy Power, who commissioned the statue, say it is visible from the coast of France, sixteen miles (25 km) away. England plays their opening group match of the Euro 2012 soccer tournament against France on Monday.

England's national football team manager Roy Hodgson appears as a reproduction of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue above the White Cliffs of Dover, June 7.

"Since Christ the Redeemer was constructed in Rio de Janeiro in 1931, Brazil has gone on to become the world’s leading footballing nation," said Paddy Power's Ken Robertson. "We’re hoping some of that success can rub off on England in time for their Euro 2012 opener against France on Monday. Anyway, at the end of the day this is definitely the closest Roy will get to Rio this month!"

Olympic torch lit by sun's rays at birthplace of Games

    Orestis Panagiotou / EPA

Actress Ino Menegaki, in the role of the High Priestess, lights the torch of the Olympic Flame in front of Hera Temple in Ancient Olympia, Greece, on May 10, 2012.

The Associated Press reports — The flame that will burn during the London Games was lit at the birthplace of the ancient Olympics on Thursday, heralding the start of a torch relay that will culminate with the opening ceremony on July 27.

Actress Ino Menegaki, dressed as a high priestess, stood before the 2,600-year-old Temple of Hera, and after an invocation to Apollo, the ancient Greeks' Sun God, used a mirror to focus the sun's rays and light a torch.

The triangular torch is designed to highlight the fact that London is hosting the Olympics for the third time. It also staged the games in 1908 and 1948.

Under bright sunny skies there was no need for the backup flame that was used during the final rehearsal for the Olympic torch lighting a day earlier. Read the full story.

Swimming horses race across Venezuela's Apure River

The Associated Press reports from Apure, Venezuela — At the blast of a whistle, a half dozen horses plunge into the Apure River and set out for the distant shore in a unique annual spectacle commemorating a historic battle.

Thousands of cowboys and their families gather to watch each year on the anniversary of a 1819 battle fought by soldiers led by independence heroes Simon Bolivar and Gen. Jose Antonio Paez.

Paez and about 150 soldiers swam across the river alongside their horses, then attacked and defeated a force of more than 1,000 Spanish troops who had been sent to quash their rebellion, which eventually led to independence.

Today, only the horses do the swimming, as competitors in canoes guide them across the river. Read more.
